Aila frowned out of the carriage window as the crowds lining the street struggled to get a glimpse of the champion, their cheering and shouting almost drowning everything else out.
âAre they always like this?â she said.
âAye,â said Corthie, âbut today was only my third time out there. Iâm sure theyâll get bored of it soon enough.â
Aila nodded. âI bet there are a thousand women in Icehaven right now who hate me.â
âDonât say that. Everyone loves the image of me, but they donât know me. You know me.â
âDo I? Last night I thought I did, when we stayed up talking, and drinking wine, and⦠the other thing, but after seeing you today Iâm not sure any more.â
Corthie smiled. âI especially enjoyed the âother thingâ. We should do some more of that when we get back to the palace.â
âSomething tells me youâre not taking this seriously.â
âI donât think I understand whatâs bothering you. You say you donât really know me, and maybe youâre right, but thatâs fine, because weâre getting to know each other. I learned loads about you last night that I didnât know, and Iâm looking forward to learning the rest.â
âI just⦠well⦠I find it hard to equate the Corthie I was speaking to last night with the Corthie I saw out there this morning. In fact, I donât think I can come to watch you again; itâs too much for me to take.â
âBecause you think Iâm going to get killed?â
âYes, thereâs that. Also though, you seem like a different person when youâre fighting the greenhides; a scary person. You made Belinda look moderate and demure, and sheâs neither of those things.â
Corthieâs smile faded. âYou think Iâm a monster?â
âNo, but thereâs a well of violence within you that I hadnât seen before, which runs counter to the man you seem to be when youâre not fighting.â
âItâs how I was trained to cope with it,â he said. âFor the four years I spent on Lostwell, I had to separate the two halves of my life, and keep them shut away from each other. Thereâs no middle ground. This is who I am, but when I pull on battle-vision and go out to fight, I become that other person, as if Iâm in a trance. No, not a trance. Iâm focussed, concentrating on everything around me, and I let my bodyâs reactions take over.â
âYou enjoy it, Corthie; I saw you.â
âAye, that part of me does enjoy it. Itâs intensely liberating. Some people need fear to motivate them to fight, but Iâm never afraid out there.â
âThatâs not normal.â
He smiled. âI know.â
Aila glanced out of the window and saw the large bulk of Alkirk Palace approach.
âIâm going to change the subject,â Corthie said, âbecause weâre nearly back, and thereâs something you should know. I wanted to tell you last night, but to be honest I was so happy to see you that it slipped my mind. Iâve been sworn to secrecy, so Lady Yvona might get annoyed, but Iâm not going to keep anything from you.
